When Poppy first came to into Helen’s care at age 14, she’d been living isolated for 4 years with her mum as her only companion.

Sadly, her mum’s mental illness meant Poppy hadn’t been to school for years. She barely ever left home. She didn’t go to the shops. She never saw the beach just 10 minutes away.

Poppy had no other family or friends in Australia. So when she discovered her mum lifeless one day, the only person she knew, depended on and loved, was gone. She needed a special foster carer - someone who would give her a new place to belong as she re-entered the normal world of a teenager.

Thanks to kind people like you, Poppy found a new home. Her foster carer, Helen, walked with her on the journey of recovering from trauma. Together, with your support, Poppy was able to:

Heal from the grief of losing her mum, the only person she knew, depended on and loved.
Return to school, starting at Year 10 after missing the first 4 years of secondary education.
Discover her passions such as art, media and even hairdressing at TAFE.
Find new friends and start socialising – going to the movies, having sleepovers like other young people her age, and baking macarons for them (scroll down for recipe link).
Catch up on medical checkups missed over the years – she needed 9 immunisations plus a root canal and fillings.
Bond with her new family including not only Helen but also her other three daughters who call Poppy “little sis”.
