At just 14, Emma* was living in residential care after years of abuse at home.

Lonely and searching for connection, she began chatting to a stranger online. His compliments made her seen and special. What Emma didn’t realise was that she was being groomed.

Predators don’t take breaks.

They look for chances to target and trick children, especially those in care who are often longing for connection and belonging.

When schools close and children lose daily contact with teachers and friends, predators take advantage of their isolation, and children in out of home care can be more vulnerable.

Thankfully,
Emma’s carer Nina had recently completed our Power to Kids training. She spotted the red flags and started a brave conversation with Emma about relationships and sexual safety.

Through patience, trust and consistent communication, Emma came to realise that she was being groomed. She was also placed in a new home to ensure her safety.

With 1 in 4 Australian children experiencing sexual abuse, the need for education and brave conversations has never been greater.
